Professor Brema's research combines fields of hydrology, water management, climate change, biodiversity, LULC and multivariate analysis to identify the drivers, pressures on lakes, wetlands and reservoirs.

Professor Brema and team deals with the hydro-ecology assessment and ecosystem evaluation services in wetlands, urban heating in cities and biodiversity changes in mountainous region using various tools including remote sensing and imageries. Professor Brema’s research focusses on understanding the changes in natural processes and the effect of anthropogenic effects on various environmental systems of Indian Ramsar sites and biodiversity spots. The studies are carried out with the satellite imageries, toposheets, longterm records, field visits, hydrological modelling and water quality sampling. The fluctuations in water quality due to anthropogenic effects, salinity intrusion etc. are studies based on field sampling and testing. The variations due to climate changes in flows and meteorological variables are studied using SWAT modelling and multivariate statistical techniques. The team also studies variations in agricultural yield and pattern due to the effect of climate changes based on field survey and various agro-economic models.

Much of the research focuses on Ramsar sites: wetlands such as Loktak lake (Manipur), Point calimere (Tamil Nadu), Pallikaranai (TamilNadu) and Kol wetlands (Kerala) in India with grants from the Ramsar Regional Center – East Asia (RRC-EA), Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF)
